NSA Board Chairman raises alarm over Accra Sports Stadium condition

NSA Closes Accra Sports Stadium On GPL Clubs For Maintenance Works

National Sports Authority (NSA) Board Chairman, Prof. Fred Awaah, has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Accra Sports Stadium, describing the facility as a potential “death trap.”

Prof. Awaah made the remarks on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, following an inspection of the stadium by officials of the National Sports Authority, members of the Ghana Sports Fund and government representatives.

According to him, the structural condition of parts of the facility is alarming and could pose a significant safety risk, particularly when the stadium is filled to capacity.

Prof. Awaah warned that failure to address the structural challenges could result in a major disaster.

“That’s just a death trap. You never know when the entire place will collapse, maybe with a big population, where we will have another disaster. Again, if we had our own way, we would have pulled down the infrastructure for a new one to be underway,” he told Plan B Sports

The inspection comes amid growing concerns over the ability of the Accra Sports Stadium to safely host major sporting events.

The facility last underwent major renovations in 2018 ahead of Ghana’s hosting of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. It was also renovated and modernised in 2007 as part of preparations for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite these interventions, officials say the stadium now requires further attention to address emerging structural and infrastructural challenges.

The Accra Sports Stadium remains one of Ghana’s major sporting venues and is among facilities approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host Category A matches.

The concerns have emerged at a critical time as Ghana prepares to host the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, while the Black Stars are also scheduled to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in September.

Authorities are therefore expected to intensify efforts to rehabilitate the facility and ensure that it meets the required safety and international standards for both domestic and international competitions.

The latest inspection has renewed calls for a comprehensive assessment of the stadium and a long-term solution to its structural challenges rather than continued temporary interventions.
