Member of Parliament for Banda Constituency and Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, has asserted that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government would have sold the Jubilee House if not for the current hung parliament.
According to him, the hung parliament has an impact on the balanced power dynamic in the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic.
Speaking during an interview on UTV, he claimed “If not for the hung parliament we have, the NPP government would have sold the Jubilee House by now. They would have pasted ‘for sale’ on it and sold it.”
He emphasized that the current parliamentary composition has prevented the government from making unilateral decisions that could significantly impact national assets.
Ahmed Ibrahim also criticized the NPP government for proposing a $490 million tax waiver for companies under the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative.
He pointed out the inconsistency of this proposal by comparing it to a recent $150 million loan the government sought approval for.
“They brought $490 million as tax waivers for companies under 1D1F and we told them, ‘we are taking a loan of $150 million and the taxes the companies are supposed to pay are being waived.’ So, we are losing three times what we are going to take a loan for, so we won’t allow them to pass the loan agreement,” Ibrahim explained.
He underscored the minority’s firm stance against the proposed tax waivers for the listed companies, arguing that the financial implications are too significant to overlook.
“The minority will not allow the tax waiver for the listed companies which have been presented to parliament for approval as the amount involved is too much,” he added.
