NPP has no clear campaign message ahead of 2028 – Thomas Ayertey

NPP To Hold National Annual Delegates Conference

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Thomas Ayertey, has questioned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) political messaging ahead of the 2028 general elections, claiming the opposition party has yet to present a clear campaign message to Ghanaians.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Ayertey argued that the NPP has increasingly focused on allegations against the government rather than outlining what it intends to offer voters.

He said the opposition party’s criticism of the government has not, in his view, translated into a convincing alternative policy direction.

Mr. Ayertey pointed to developments in the economy and infrastructure, including changes in inflation, the performance of the cedi and ongoing road projects, as areas he believes the NDC government can use to communicate its record to the public.

The Bank of Ghana reported that headline inflation had fallen to 5.3% in June 2026, while the International Monetary Fund also reported improvements in Ghana’s macroeconomic indicators during 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

On infrastructure, the government says it has committed substantial resources to the Big Push programme, including more than GH¢40 billion towards road projects.

However, Mr. Ayertey said the NPP’s approach of highlighting allegations of corruption and using social media attacks would not provide Ghanaians with a clear picture of what the party intends to do if given another opportunity to govern.

He also criticised the economic record of the previous NPP administration under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, while questioning the policy direction associated with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the NPP has struggled to provide a convincing explanation of its economic record and a clear alternative to the policies being pursued by the current NDC administration.

Mr. Ayertey maintained that the NDC would focus on communicating its policies and achievements rather than adopting what he described as a campaign strategy centred on allegations and misinformation.

He said the NPP’s ability to challenge the NDC ahead of 2028 would depend on its capacity to present a clear alternative to voters.

The NPP, meanwhile, has publicly stated that its focus is on rebuilding its structures and preparing for the 2028 elections. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said in August 2026 that the party’s reorganisation was aimed at strengthening its membership and preparing it to regain political power.

Mr. Ayertey’s comments form part of the ongoing political debate between the NDC and NPP over their respective records in government and the issues likely to shape the 2028 election campaign.
