A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Tema Central Constituency, Sam Annon, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for announcing a temporary GH¢2.00 per litre reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel, describing the move as a timely intervention to ease the burden on Ghanaians.
The directive, announced by the Presidency on Monday, August 3, 2026, follows a Cabinet decision and builds on the government’s fuel price intervention introduced in April. The reduction takes effect from Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and will remain in force for one month, unless reviewed earlier.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem with Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Annon described the President’s decision as a noble one that would provide relief to commercial drivers and the general public.
According to him, nearly 60 percent of commercial vehicles operating in Ghana run on diesel, making the intervention particularly significant for the transport sector and the cost of doing business.
He urged the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to appreciate the government’s efforts instead of focusing on whether the reduction is sufficient, arguing that every meaningful intervention aimed at reducing the cost of living deserves recognition.
Mr. Annon further praised President Mahama’s leadership, describing it as honest, responsive and committed to addressing the economic challenges confronting Ghanaians.
His comments come after the GPRTU acknowledged the diesel subsidy but maintained that the GH¢2.00 per litre reduction would provide only limited relief, insisting that fuel prices remain significantly higher than when discussions on transport fare adjustments first began.
