Manchester United’s return to the UEFA Champions League has been given an early dose of glamour after the English giants were drawn against some of Europe’s biggest clubs in the league phase.
The three-time European champions will face German heavyweights Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, while also coming up against Atletico Madrid and Villarreal of Spain.
Their schedule will also see them take on Italian clubs AS Roma and Como, Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, and Champions League debutants FC Sabah.
Sabah secured their place in the competition after overcoming Israel’s Hapoel Beer-Sheva 6-4 on aggregate, setting up a notable meeting with Michael Carrick’s Manchester United.
Aston Villa have also been handed a challenging route in the competition.
Unai Emery’s side will face reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, who are looking to continue their recent dominance of European football.
Villa’s other opponents include Spanish giants Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund of Germany, Club Brugge of Belgium, Turkish sides Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, Czech outfit Slavia Prague and Norwegian club Viking.
With Manchester United and Aston Villa both facing heavyweight opposition, the English representatives will have little room for complacency as they begin their respective Champions League campaigns.
