President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated that the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative was created to combat corruption and ensure accountability in public office rather than to target individuals unfairly.
Speaking to members of the Ghana Bar Association during a courtesy call on Wednesday, Mahama emphasized ORAL’s role as a platform for whistleblowers to report corruption with proper investigative procedures in place.
“One of the issues we are confronted with is the issue of corruption and accountability in office. It’s become the norm for people to dip their hands into the public purse or misappropriate funds,” Mahama stated.
He noted that corruption was among the top five concerns of Ghanaians during the last campaign, making it essential for the government to take a stronger stance in addressing the issue.
Mahama explained that ORAL was designed to provide a direct platform for whistleblowers, with a hotline that received over 2,000 calls. While some allegations proved baseless, others were substantial and were forwarded to the Attorney General for further action.
He stressed that the initiative was not a tool for political persecution but a crucial mechanism in the fight against corruption.
“So I just wanted to clarify that it’s not an instrument for witch-hunting anybody. It’s an instrument for assisting in the fight against corruption,” Mahama affirmed.
His remarks underscored the government’s commitment to tackling corruption and promoting transparency in governance.
