The government is set to take formal control of the National Cathedral project site by October 31, 2026, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama for the dissolution of the project’s Board of Trustees.
The directive, communicated in a letter signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, requires the Board to liaise with the project consultant and formally hand over the site to the Ministry.
The handover is expected to provide the government with an opportunity to assess the current state of the National Cathedral project and determine its next course of action.
The decision brings the Board of Trustees’ role in overseeing the project to an end as the government considers how to proceed with the controversial project, which has attracted considerable public debate over the years, particularly regarding its construction and financing.
In the letter, Minister Mahama Ayariga, on behalf of President Mahama, expressed appreciation to members of the Board for their commitment to promoting the Christian faith in Ghana.
The government is yet to announce what specific plans it has for the project following the takeover of the site.
The National Cathedral project has remained a subject of political and public discussion, with questions raised over its funding, construction progress and the use of public resources.
The October 31 deadline will therefore mark a significant point in the government’s review of the project as it considers its future.
