The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has issued a strong rejoinder to what it describes as misleading reports circulating on social media regarding alleged rape incidents involving its students.
In a press statement, the university clarified that the incidents in question did not occur on its campus but rather in the nearby community of Ayeduase, placing them outside the jurisdiction of KNUST’s internal security operations.
Management further emphasized that the suspect involved is not affiliated with the university’s security services. According to the statement, the individual is a private security guard employed by the Ayeduase Roman Catholic Primary School.
KNUST also confirmed that both cases have been formally reported to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in Oduom, Kumasi, and are currently being handled by the appropriate state authorities. The suspect, the university noted, remains in police custody, with the matter now before the court.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations, the university expressed concern over what it called “misleading impressions” created by the reports and urged media outlets to verify information with its University Relations Office before publication.
KNUST added that the victims are receiving counselling support from DOVVSU, with additional psychological and medical assistance being arranged through the university’s Counselling Centre.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of students and pledged continued collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served.
