I was promised GH¢2 million to step down for Deputy Speaker to join NPP – Kwasi Nti

Chairman Akwasi Nti, an Ashanti Regional 1st Vice Chairman hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that he was promised two million Ghana cedis to step down as chairman for Adansi Fomena on the party’s ticket, in order to facilitate the formation of the majority caucus in the 8th Parliament of Ghana.

According to him, during the then primaries, the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Lawyer Andrews Amoako Asiamah, who is also now the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, had issues with the party’s album.

After failing in court, he contested as an independent candidate and won. The NPP later sought his support to join the majority caucus to enable government business.

Asiamah, however, gave a condition that he would only join the NPP if Chairman Nti stepped down.

Speaking in an interview on Pure FM on June 2, 2026, Chairman Akwasi Nti explained that although he was promised GH¢2 million to step down for the MP to join the party back, the money was never paid.

He added that Kennedy Agyapong, then MP for Assin Central, later invited him to his house and gave him GH¢1 million to clear his debts, after which he agreed to step down.

“The money that they promised me was GH¢2 million and it was never given to me. That is why I was fighting with some people in the region but I won’t mention names. So, Kennedy called me and gave me money to pay some of my debts because the party had not treated me fairly.”
