The Ministry of Health has rejected claims of a shortage of antiretroviral medicines (ARVs) in Ghana, assuring persons living with HIV that the medications remain available at designated health facilities across the country.
The Ministry’s response follows a statement by the Network of Persons Living with HIV in Ghana (NAP+ Ghana), which raised concerns over the availability of antiretroviral medicines.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Tony Goodman, on August 11, 2026, the Ministry said it was inaccurate to suggest that ARVs were unavailable in the country.
According to the Ministry, antiretroviral medicines are currently available at designated health facilities to support the continued treatment and care of persons living with HIV.
The Ministry, however, acknowledged that it is undertaking routine procurement and supply activities, including the restocking of medical commodities at the Medical Stores.
It said plans are in place to expedite the fulfilment of its procurement obligations to ensure sustained availability and timely distribution of medicines and other essential health commodities to health facilities nationwide.
The Ministry also dismissed suggestions that antiretroviral medicines had expired at the port, describing such claims as incorrect.
It said it continues to engage relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective management and timely clearance of medical commodities.
The Ministry further disclosed that it has engaged NAP+ Ghana and assured the organisation of its open-door policy in addressing concerns relating to the availability and distribution of ARVs.
It reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure that persons living with HIV have uninterrupted access to the medicines and services they require.
The Ministry of Health has consequently assured the public, particularly persons living with HIV, that it will continue to take measures to safeguard access to essential medicines and ensure their equitable distribution across the country.
