GPRTU maintains 30% proposed transport fare increase

Driver Unions Suspend Intended Strike

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it has not withdrawn its proposal for a 30 percent increase in transport fares.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, said discussions on the proposed adjustment are still ongoing despite the committee presenting its report.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr Amoah said the union is prepared to consider a reduction in the proposed 30 percent increase but insists it should not fall below 25 percent.

He explained that a meeting scheduled for today has been postponed to tomorrow due to the public holiday.

According to Mr Amoah, the Ministry has proposed an increase of between 10 and 15 percent, while the GPRTU’s initial proposal was for a 30 percent adjustment.

He acknowledged that the proposed 30 percent increase may be difficult for passengers but said drivers are also facing significant financial pressures, particularly those who work for vehicle owners while having several bills and family responsibilities to meet.

Mr Amoah further stated that if the government’s proposed 10 percent increase is eventually accepted, there should be a corresponding reduction in petrol and other fuel prices.

He maintained that the GPRTU could also reconsider its 30 percent proposal if fuel prices decline.

The GPRTU Deputy PRO also stressed the need for an official fare adjustment to be approved as soon as possible, arguing that delays could encourage some drivers to increase fares arbitrarily.

He warned that drivers who charge passengers above the officially approved fares could face sanctions, including legal action and possible imprisonment.

The ongoing discussions are expected to determine the final percentage increase and the new transport fares to be approved for implementation.
