The government has put the proposed redevelopment of the Agbogbloshie 24-Hour Economy Market on hold to allow for further consultations with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), market leaders and other stakeholders.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, announced the decision on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, during an engagement with the leadership and traders of the Yam Market at Agbogbloshie.
Mr. Ayariga was accompanied by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey.
According to the Minister, the temporary suspension will allow the government and the Assembly to assess conditions on the ground, review the proposed redevelopment and agree with stakeholders on a practical arrangement that accommodates existing market operators while improving the area.
He explained that the government’s objective under the 24-Hour Economy Market initiative is to improve market infrastructure across the country without disregarding existing commercial activities.
Mr. Ayariga said the government had directed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to develop improved market infrastructure, stressing that the latest engagement was intended to allow all relevant parties to jointly assess the proposed development and determine the most appropriate approach for Accra.
He said further consultations would be held before any redevelopment exercise proceeds at the Agbogbloshie market.
