Government must act on corruption allegations instead of complaining – Social activist Michael Teye

Lack Of Integrity Is Cause Of Corruption In Ghana – Political Analyst
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Social activist Michael Teye has urged the government to move beyond making allegations of corruption against former officials and instead use the institutions of state to investigate and prosecute anyone found culpable.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Adomba De-Starboy, Teye criticised what he described as the government’s tendency to repeatedly raise concerns about the alleged misuse of public funds without taking decisive action.

According to him, if the government has credible evidence that funds allocated for flood mitigation under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project were misappropriated by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, it should immediately initiate investigations and ensure those responsible are prosecuted.

He argued that allegations that flood mitigation funds were diverted to purchase vehicles and finance unrelated expenditures point to possible corruption and abuse of public resources. However, he stressed that it is the responsibility of the government, not ordinary citizens, to use the appropriate state institutions to recover misused funds and hold offenders accountable.

Michael Teye further noted that the alleged misuse of flood mitigation funds has far-reaching consequences beyond financial losses. He said inadequate investment in drainage and flood prevention infrastructure has contributed to recurring floods, resulting in deaths, the displacement of families, destruction of property and homelessness.

He maintained that any public official found responsible for such negligence should face the full rigours of the law.

On illegal mining, Teye also addressed reports linking businessman Ibrahim Mahama and Titles Global to galamsey activities. He said such allegations should not be dismissed as political rhetoric, insisting that if there is credible evidence of wrongdoing, the appropriate state institutions must investigate and prosecute those involved regardless of their political affiliation or social status.

He cautioned against what he described as a culture of selective justice, saying the practice of protecting political allies only undermines accountability and encourages impunity.

Teye concluded by calling on political leaders to back their allegations with concrete action, insisting that genuine accountability can only be achieved when those implicated in corruption are investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
