Gender Ministry cautions against violence following circulation of Videos involving woman, child

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has cautioned against violence against women and children following the circulation of videos and images reportedly involving a woman identified as Nana Akua Addo and her child.

According to the Ministry, some of the circulating footage appears to show a physical altercation involving Ms. Addo, who reportedly sustained visible injuries, while another video purportedly shows a child being subjected to physical violence.

The Ministry said it is deeply concerned about the disturbing images and reports, stressing that violence in all its forms is unacceptable and must not be normalised, excused or tolerated.

It noted that the Domestic Violence Act, 2007 (Act 732) provides a legal framework for protecting persons from domestic violence, while the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560) provides for the protection and welfare of children.

The Ministry said although the full facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incidents are still being established, it is closely monitoring developments and taking steps to ascertain the wellbeing and safety of the persons involved and determine the appropriate interventions.

It further issued a strong warning to perpetrators of violence, stating that no relationship, domestic circumstance, disagreement or perceived provocation justifies violence or abuse.

“Persons who subject others to violence and abuse will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry also urged women and all persons experiencing domestic, gender-based or other forms of violence not to suffer in silence or accept abuse as a normal part of any relationship.

It emphasised that abuse is never the victim’s fault and encouraged victims and anyone with credible information about a person at risk to report to the nearest police station or Social Welfare office.

The public can also contact the Ministry through its toll-free support lines:

  • Domestic Violence Secretariat Call Centre: 0800-111-222
  • WhatsApp: 055 175 7575
  • Helpline of Hope Call Centre: 0800-800-800 / 0800-900-900

The Ministry further appealed to the public to stop sharing graphic videos, personal information and unverified claims concerning the woman and child.

It warned that continued circulation of such material could further expose and distress those involved, particularly the child.

The Ministry said it remains committed to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of women and children and will  continue working with relevant institutions to ensure that persons affected by violence receive the necessary protection, care and support.
