Dry eye syndrome: How screens and the environment may be affecting your eyes

Dry eye syndrome: How screens and the environment may be affecting your eyes
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The human eye is one of the body’s most delicate and vital organs, requiring proper care and protection to function effectively. Speaking on Nyansapo Fie on Plan B FM with host Akosua Gyamfua, Dr. Esther Asante, an optometrist at Bengali Hospital, has highlighted Dry Eye Syndrome as a common but often overlooked condition.

Dr. Asante explained that symptoms such as waking up with watery eyes, eye discomfort or unusual discharge may sometimes indicate an underlying problem with the production or quality of tears.

Dry Eye Syndrome occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the tears produced are not of sufficient quality to keep the surface of the eyes properly lubricated. While ageing is a natural risk factor, Dr. Asante noted that environmental conditions and everyday habits can also increase the risk.

She identified exposure to strong winds, dust and prolonged exposure to air conditioning as some of the environmental factors that can cause moisture on the surface of the eyes to evaporate more quickly. She also noted that some medications may reduce tear production and contribute to dry eyes.

According to Dr. Asante, modern lifestyles and increased reliance on digital devices have also contributed to the problem. Under normal circumstances, people blink frequently to keep their eyes adequately lubricated. However, prolonged concentration on smartphones, computers, televisions and books can significantly reduce the frequency of blinking, leaving the eyes dry and strained.

To reduce eye strain and protect against dry eyes, Dr. Asante recommended the 20-20-20 rule. The guideline encourages people who spend long periods looking at screens to take a break every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds, and consciously blink to help keep the eyes lubricated.

She also advised people who spend time in windy or dusty environments to use protective eyewear or glasses to shield their eyes from drying winds and dust.

Dr. Asante stressed the importance of seeking professional eye care rather than attempting to self-diagnose or treat persistent symptoms. She explained that proper tests conducted by an eye-care professional are necessary to accurately determine whether a person has Dry Eye Syndrome and identify the appropriate treatment.

She therefore urged the public not to wait until they experience severe discomfort or changes in vision before seeking professional care, emphasizing the importance of regular eye examinations as part of maintaining good eye health.
