The Eastern Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Nana Akua Ansah, has attributed a recent crash on the Accra-Nsawam highway to possible driver fatigue, describing the incident as deeply concerning.
Speaking after the accident, which occurred on the stretch of Accra-Nsawam, she said the Authority was disappointed by the development, especially after ongoing public education campaigns aimed at reducing road crashes.
She made this assertion during an interview on Bryt FM.
“We weren’t happy with what happened because the statistics we got last year weren’t encouraging at all,” she stated. “Just last week, we went to educate people on several safety issues, so I wasn’t expecting something bad to happen on a day like this.”
According to her, a preliminary assessment of the accident scene suggests that the crash may not have been caused by structural faults on the road but rather human error.
Describing the location, she explained that the section of the highway features a small hill and a sharp curve for drivers travelling from Accra. However, she maintained that the road design itself does not appear to be inherently dangerous.
“Looking at the road from Nsawam to Accra, you can see there’s a small hill, and if you are coming from Accra, there is a sharp curve at the point where the accident happened. If you examine the system closely, there is no problem with that place,” she said.
While acknowledging that visibility at night could be a concern, she emphasized that many crashes on that stretch are often linked to driver behavior, particularly fatigue.
“With this accident, we suspect the driver may have tipped off due to tiredness. We will have to determine the time he set off, where he made stops along the journey, and the duration of the trip to establish whether fatigue played a role. From the preliminary observations, tiredness could have been a significant factor,” she added.
