Ghana’s growing demand for food and consumer goods continues to be met largely through international markets, with Asia led by China emerging as the country’s primary sourcing destination in the final quarter of 2025.
New trade data from the Ghana Statistical Service show that China accounted for GH?14.3 billion of Ghana’s total imports in Q4 2025, representing 23.3 percent of all goods brought into the country and cementing its position as the single largest external supplier.
The United States, Netherlands, Belgium and Nigeria followed as other key origin markets, collectively reinforcing Ghana’s reliance on a relatively small group of countries for critical imports, including food-related products and agricultural inputs.
Beyond these top suppliers, the structure of Ghana’s food import chain reveals a wider global network.
Vegetable products, a key component of the country’s food imports, were sourced predominantly from Vietnam, underscoring the role of Asian markets in supporting domestic consumption.
Overall, Ghana’s import bill stood at GH?61.4 billion in the fourth quarter, driven largely by demand for fuels, machinery, vehicles and consumer goods – many of which are essential to food production, processing and distribution.
While imports remained strong, the country recorded a significant trade surplus during the period, supported by robust exports to markets such as India and the United Arab Emirates.
However, exports continue to be heavily concentrated in primary commodities, particularly gold and cocoa, contrasting with the diversified nature of imports.
The data highlights a persistent structural gap: Ghana exports largely raw materials but depends on global partners for finished and semi-processed goods, including food supplies.
With Asia accounting for nearly half of all imports, the country’s food security and price stability remain closely tied to global trade dynamics raising fresh questions about the pace of Ghana’s import substitution and local production strategies.
