National Democratic Congress (NDC) member Hon. Charlotte Eyiram Dzirakor has called for a gradual but effective approach to tackling illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that its effects on water bodies, agriculture and food production pose serious concerns for Ghanaians.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuonsem, hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi, Hon. Dzirakor discussed the environmental consequences of illegal mining and the need for practical, sustainable measures to address the problem.

She expressed concern about the potential impact of polluted water on agricultural activities, particularly the cultivation of vegetables and other food crops. She stressed the importance of protecting water bodies from contamination to safeguard food production and public health.

Hon. Dzirakor also underscored the need to preserve Ghana’s natural environment, noting that environmental degradation threatens the sustainability of ecosystems and the well-being of future generations.

Acknowledging that galamsey serves as a source of livelihood for some people, she maintained that economic activities must be conducted responsibly and in accordance with the law. She noted that addressing illegal practices requires consistent efforts to improve compliance with existing regulations.

The Nkosuonsem guest advocated a systematic approach to tackling galamsey, suggesting that gradual interventions could help address illegal mining while giving affected communities the opportunity to adjust and explore alternative sources of livelihood.

She urged stakeholders to collaborate in developing lasting solutions to illegal mining, emphasising the need to protect water bodies, preserve the environment and ensure that economic activities do not compromise the welfare of future generations.
