CHAN 2025 Qualifiers: Black Galaxies crash out after 3-1 defeat to Nigeria

CHAN 2025 Qualifiers: Black Galaxies crash out after 3-1 defeat to Nigeria

The Black Galaxies became the second national team of Ghana to fail to qualify for an African championship in 2024.

Led by head coach Didi Dramani, the Black Galaxies suffered a disappointing 1-3 defeat to the Home Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo on Saturday, December 28.

Following a goalless draw in the first leg in Accra, the Ghanaians began the second leg with the infamous “park the bus” approach, hoping to catch the Nigerians on the counter.

Several astute football pundits questioned Dramani’s decision to start with five defenders and two midfielders—Issah Yakubu and Mantey—who are not known for their creative prowess. This setup stifled proper supply to forwards Albert Amoah and Jerry Afriyie.

Sodiq Ismail opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 19th minute, set up by captain Nduka, who doubled the lead just two minutes later. Isaac Saviour capitalized on a defensive error by the Ghanaian backline to make it 3-0 by halftime in favor of the Home Eagles.

Amankona Stephen reduced the deficit for the visitors 18 minutes from time but couldn’t prevent the Home Eagles’ return to the CHAN after missing the last two editions.
