The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially revoked the membership of Mohammed Umar Sanda after he declared his intention to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election as an independent candidate. The by-election is scheduled for March 3, 2026.
In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party noted that Umar Sanda’s move directly violates the party’s constitution and disregards its collective decision to field a democratically selected candidate.
“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
The NDC further warned Umar Sanda that he is prohibited from using the party’s name, logo, colors, symbols, or any intellectual property in the course of his campaign or related political activities.
This development sets the stage for a heated by-election in Ayawaso East, with the NDC facing the challenge of a former member running as an independent against its officially endorsed candidate, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed.
