The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the August edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise will take place on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, with authorities warning of strict enforcement against violators.
In a press release issued on Monday, July 27, the Assembly said the exercise will involve stakeholders, traders, shop owners, transport operators, market leaders, corporate institutions, organisations and residents across the metropolis.
The AMA directed that all shops, stalls, tabletop businesses and hawking activities remain closed throughout the exercise to allow for the clean-up.
Activities will focus on desilting drains, clearing choked gutters and waterways, sweeping public spaces and evacuating refuse as part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation, protect public health and reduce flooding.
The clean-up exercise will be carried out across all sub-metros, electoral areas, markets, lorry parks, communities, business districts and other public spaces within the Accra metropolis.
The Assembly urged all residents and businesses to actively participate by cleaning their surroundings, desilting drains, clearing frontage areas, removing refuse and supporting efforts to keep the capital clean.
The AMA further stressed that strict enforcement will be a key feature of the exercise. It warned that anyone who fails to participate, obstructs the exercise or engages in trading during the clean-up period will face sanctions, including arrest, fines or prosecution before the sanitation court, in accordance with the relevant bye-laws.
The Assembly has therefore called on all stakeholders and residents to cooperate fully and support the initiative to promote a cleaner, healthier and safer Accra.
