A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Selorm Avedetsi, has called for a comprehensive approach to road safety in Ghana, urging authorities to combine improved road infrastructure, driver discipline, effective law enforcement and modern electronic traffic monitoring systems to reduce road accidents.
Speaking on Plan B 104.5 FM’s Nkosuosɛm, Mr Avedetsi argued that road construction and rehabilitation could be undertaken in phases rather than waiting for government to mobilise all the funds required to complete entire projects.
He cited improvements along several routes in Accra, including Madina–Accra Central, Airport Residential Area, Roman Ridge, Nkrumah Circle and the Pokuase–Amasaman corridor, as examples of how improved road infrastructure could enhance transportation and support development.
However, he stressed that good roads alone would not guarantee road safety, particularly when some motorists continue to disregard traffic regulations.
He expressed concern about indiscipline among commercial drivers, especially some trotro operators, who he said drive as though traffic regulations do not apply to them.
Mr Avedetsi also highlighted the dangers pedestrians face at zebra crossings, recounting an incident in the Adabraka area involving a young girl who attempted to cross the road after two vehicles had stopped to give her way.
According to him, a taxi driver overtook the stationary vehicles, creating a potentially dangerous situation for the pedestrian.
He further cautioned motorists against blindly relying on traffic lights, explaining that a green light does not automatically guarantee that it is safe to proceed. He urged drivers to remain alert and ensure the road is clear before moving.
The NDC communicator consequently called for the introduction of automatic electronic traffic enforcement systems to detect traffic violations, monitor motorists and improve compliance with road safety regulations.
He believes such technology could complement the work of traffic police and strengthen the enforcement of traffic laws.
Mr Avedetsi maintained that reducing road accidents in Ghana requires a combination of quality road infrastructure, responsible driving, effective law enforcement and the adoption of modern technology.
