Exhibition Of Voters Register Begins

The Electoral Commission (EC) Friday opened exhibition centres across the country for prospective voters to verify and authenticate details on their identity cards ahead of the December General Election.

At about 0715 hours a good number of centres in the national capital, Accra, had set up as would-be voters trickle in to check their details.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that the exhibition centres visited were adhering to the COVID-19 protocols – social distancing, wearing of masks and the washing of hands.

Seventy-three-year old Freeman Bediako, who was the first to verify his details at the City Engineers Exhibition Centre 4 in the Odododiodoo Constituency in the Accra Metropolis, said he was delighted that his information was accurately captured in the register.

Mr Bediako, after going through the COVID-19 protocols, was given a seat by Ms Ayishetu Briamah, the Exhibition Officer, before his details were verified.

“Everything is correct and I am happy. Hopefully, come December, when God gives me life I will come and vote,” he said.

He encouraged other prospective voters to visit the centres to check their details to complement the efforts of the EC for a clean register.

At about 0730hours when the GNA got to the Sempe Primary Exhibition Centre Two, Mr Kunny Engmann, the Exhibition Officer, said only three persons had visited the centre to verify their details and expressed the hope that the numbers would go up in the coming days.

At the National Primary School Exhibition Centre One, Two, Three and Four in the Ashaiman Constituency, the GNA was told that some persons could not find their names in the register.

Naa Ayorko Adjetey, the Exhibition Officer, wrote their names in the inclusion list for another round of checks.

“Some cannot find their names so I have taken their details and have asked them to come tomorrow or later for the next action,” she said.

There were security officials to ensure serenity at all centres visited with the exercise progressing steadily.

The exhibition exercise would end on September 25, Mrs Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC announced at the “Let the Citizen Know” media briefing in Accra.

She urged prospective voters to participate fully in the exercise as it was an important aspect of the election process.

Mrs Mensa said the Commission was, under Constitutional Instrument 91, mandated to compile a voters’ register and display it for public inspection and correction.

She said adequate materials had been dispatched nationwide and a total of 73,107 personnel, including exhibition officers and their deputies as well as other supporting staff, had been recruited to undertake the exercise.
