The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested eight suspects for allegedly assaulting a 21-year-old man as part of his initiation into an internet fraud operation at Kotokrom in the Sunyani West Municipality.
According to a press release issued by the Bono Regional Police Command on Friday, October 9, 2026, the victim, identified as Godstime Umukoro, was allegedly subjected to severe beatings by the suspects.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m., after a patrol team from the Regional Operations Unit received a distress call that a group of people were attacking an individual at Kotokrom.
Police officers who responded to the call found Umukoro with multiple marks of assault on his body and arrested the eight suspects at the scene.
The suspects have been identified as Peter Mbam, 24; Godwin Moses, 26; Humble Oweifah, 18; Osas Ogbemudia, 30; Samuel Aisosa, 22; Ashile Godbess, 24; Alexander Uyuo, 30; and Patrick Romans, 25.
During interrogation, the suspects allegedly told investigators that they beat the victim as part of his initiation into the internet fraud business, claiming they had undergone a similar process themselves.
Preliminary investigations further revealed that the suspects were allegedly brought to Ghana by one Nwachukwu King Augustine, identified by police as their chairman.
Police investigations indicate that the group allegedly used downloaded images of foreign military personnel to deceive unsuspecting individuals online.
The suspects reportedly initiated conversations with their targets under the pretext that they were military personnel stationed at the war front in Yemen. After allegedly convincing their victims to send money, the proceeds were paid into the account of their purported leader.
The Bono Regional Police Command has commended members of the public for their swift intervention and reaffirmed its commitment to working with residents to combat crime in the region.
The police have not indicated in the release whether the suspects have been formally charged before a court.
