24-Hour Economy: James Tamaklo questions implementation progress, funding

NPP reorganisation needed to restore public confidence – James E. Tamakloe

Hon. James Elorm Tamaklo has questioned the progress of Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Policy, calling on the government to provide a clear account of its implementation since its official launch in July 2025.

Speaking on Plan B 104.5 FM’s Nkosuosɛm, hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi, Mr Tamaklo expressed concern about the structures, resources and funding arrangements put in place to support the policy.

He argued that Ghanaians deserve to know what has been achieved so far, particularly how the initiative is expected to create jobs, boost productivity and expand economic activities across the country.

He also questioned the government’s allocation of approximately US$10 million for the 2026 financial year, suggesting that the amount appeared insufficient for a policy expected to transform economic activities nationwide.

Despite his concerns, Mr Tamaklo acknowledged the potential of the 24-Hour Economy Policy, identifying the health sector as one area where it could deliver tangible results.

He noted that hospitals already operate around the clock and require continuous staffing and essential services, making the sector suitable for the introduction of a structured 24-hour working arrangement.

According to him, the government could leverage existing public health facilities, including hospitals constructed under previous administrations, to expand healthcare delivery by employing additional nurses and other health professionals to work in different shifts.

He proposed a structured three-shift system, arguing that it could create additional employment opportunities while ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services throughout the day and night.

Mr Tamaklo stressed that the success of the policy would depend on proper planning, feasibility studies, adequate funding and the provision of the necessary infrastructure.

He maintained that the initiative should go beyond announcing a 24-hour working arrangement, urging the government to provide clear information on its implementation progress, funding, operational structures and projected job opportunities.
