The management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has proposed that the Bank of Ghana replace the image of the Big Six on selected banknote denominations with the iconic photograph of Ghana’s independence declaration on March 6, 1957.
The proposal, contained in a press statement issued on Friday, November 6, 2026, is intended to broaden the historical representation of Ghana’s national currency by highlighting other significant moments in the country’s history.
The Memorial Park acknowledges the significant contributions of the Big Six to Ghana’s independence struggle but argues that the country’s banknotes should also reflect defining historical events that shaped its national identity.
It says the photograph of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declaring Ghana’s independence captures a defining moment in the country’s history and represents the culmination of the struggle against colonial rule.
According to the management, the proposal aligns with the Bank of Ghana’s proposed introduction of a Heritage Series of banknotes, which would provide an opportunity to celebrate significant personalities, events and milestones in Ghana’s history.
The Park further believes that incorporating the photograph into selected banknotes would be particularly meaningful as Ghana prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of its independence in 2027.
The statement, signed by the Acting Executive Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, PhD, maintains that Ghana’s currency should serve not only as a medium of exchange but also as a reflection of the country’s heritage, sovereignty and collective memory.
It argues that few moments in Ghana’s history are as significant as March 6, 1957, when the country attained independence and joined the community of sovereign nations.
