A man believed to be in his 30s has died after being electrocuted inside a Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) substation in Tamale in what is suspected to be an attempted theft of metal components.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 24, disrupting electricity supply to parts of the Tamale Business District.
NEDCo’s Northern Area Engineer, David Quarshie Doe, said the company was alerted after a major power line supplying the town went off.
Speaking to Citi News, he said the police had also reported hearing a loud noise from the substation’s control room before the power interruption.
Mr Doe said NEDCo personnel rushed to the facility to investigate and found the man lying inside the control room with visible signs of electrocution.
An inspection revealed that some components of the substation’s equipment had been detached and placed in a bag, raising suspicions that the man had entered the facility to steal them.
The incident disrupted electricity supply to parts of the central business district, with NEDCo working to restore power.
Police have conveyed the body to the Tamale Teaching Hospital morgue.
