The lack of proper support for people grieving the loss of a parent can lead to emotional difficulties that affect their workplace performance and personal relationships, Lady Elizabeth Kesewaa Nortey has cautioned.
Speaking on Nyansapo Fie, Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme hosted by Akosua Gyamfua. The guest, Lady Elizabeth Kesewaa Nortey explained that how individuals cope with parental loss depends partly on the information they receive, their personalities and the emotional bond they shared with the deceased parent.
She noted that the experience may differ from one person to another, with some developing attachment difficulties while others may find it easier to cope.
She added that when grieving individuals lack a supportive environment where they can express their emotions and mourn, they may develop unhealthy coping behaviours. According to her, some men who struggle to express their emotions may become quick-tempered, making it important for people to recognize that grief affects everyone differently.
Lady Elizabeth stressed the need for supportive workplaces, particularly through human resource departments that can recognize when employees are struggling emotionally. She also encouraged grieving individuals to seek help from trusted people and professional counsellors when necessary, noting that proper support can help them process their loss and maintain healthy relationships.
