Ayertey hails IMF’s recognition of Ghana’s economic progress, says NPP has no record to campaign on in 2028

Ayertey hails IMF’s recognition of Ghana’s economic progress, says NPP has no record to campaign on in 2028

Thomas Ayertey of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of taking credit for initiatives introduced by the NDC while failing to implement meaningful policies during its time in government.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN show hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Ayertey cited the GoldBod initiative as an example of what he described as the NPP’s failure to introduce effective policies, arguing that the party often claims credit for the NDC’s achievements.

He said Ghana’s inflation rate had declined from 23 per cent under the previous NPP administration to 5.2 per cent under the NDC government, describing the development as evidence of improving economic conditions. Ghana’s year-on-year inflation rate stood at 5.2 per cent in September 2026.

Mr. Ayertey also welcomed the International Monetary Fund’s assessment of Ghana’s economic performance, arguing that the country’s progress in economic stabilisation, alongside developments in infrastructure such as hospitals and roads, reflected the government’s efforts to revive the economy. The IMF has reported progress in Ghana’s macroeconomic stabilisation and debt sustainability, while noting that challenges remain.

He further expressed optimism that fuel prices would soon decline and said the NDC government was introducing initiatives to stabilise the economy.

Mr. Ayertey consequently called on the NPP to suspend its preparations for the 2028 general elections, arguing that the party would struggle to campaign on the economy and corruption based on its record in government.
