NDC communications team member, Hon. Selorm, has called for stronger preventive measures to stop unaccredited educational institutions from operating and enrolling students in Ghana.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuonsem, hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi, Hon. Selorm recounted his personal experience while seeking admission to the University of Ghana, which he said made him more cautious about private educational institutions.
He explained that during one of his admission attempts, he was advised against enrolling at a particular institution after concerns were raised about the accreditation status of its programmes.
According to him, the experience underscored the need for prospective students to verify the accreditation status of institutions and programmes before committing their time and resources.
Hon. Selorm, however, argued that the responsibility should not rest solely on students and parents.
He said authorities must strengthen the regulatory system to identify and prevent unaccredited institutions from operating in the first place, rather than waiting until students have already enrolled before taking action.
He noted that attending an unaccredited institution could have serious consequences for students, including academic and financial difficulties, while families could also lose significant amounts of money.
Hon. Selorm therefore called for stronger monitoring, enforcement and preventive mechanisms to protect students and their families from institutions offering programmes without the required accreditation.
He stressed that a proactive approach would help prevent students from investing years and substantial financial resources in programmes whose qualifications may not receive the necessary recognition.
