A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Darkwa, has described the government’s Kumasi-Accra Expressway project as a laudable initiative but questioned the decision to embark on a new project instead of completing the existing Accra-Kumasi dualisation project initiated by the previous NPP administration.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem with host Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Darkwa said while the new project could provide significant benefits to commuters and the country’s transport sector, government should have prioritised completing projects inherited from the previous administration.
According to him, completing the existing Accra-Kumasi dualisation project would have been a more practical approach than starting a fresh project along the same major corridor.
Mr. Darkwa also expressed doubts about the government’s proposed December 2028 completion date, describing the timeline as unrealistic given the scale and complexity of the project.
He argued that the volume of work involved would make it difficult for the project to be completed within the stated timeframe.
He maintained that while the initiative deserves commendation, government must ensure that the project’s timelines are realistic and achievable to avoid creating expectations that may not be met.
Mr. Darkwa’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about the government’s plans to improve road connectivity between Accra and Kumasi and the need to ensure value for money and timely completion of major infrastructure projects.
