Government has no campaign message for 2028 — Thomas Ayertey

NDC member Thomas Ayertey has criticised the government, arguing that it has yet to present a clear and compelling message to Ghanaians ahead of the 2028 general election.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Ayertey questioned the government’s economic record and challenged its claims of progress across key sectors of the economy.

According to him, the government has struggled to point to a major achievement that could form the basis of a convincing campaign message ahead of the next election.

Mr. Ayertey argued that developments in the economy, health, education and other sectors had not delivered the level of improvement promised to Ghanaians. He also questioned claims relating to domestic revenue mobilisation and other economic indicators, insisting that voters would ultimately judge the government based on their lived experiences.

He accused the government of relying increasingly on political communication and what he described as propaganda rather than highlighting a strong record of achievement.

Mr. Ayertey said political parties have, since 2016, had to compete vigorously in communicating their policies and achievements to the electorate. However, he maintained that the current administration had yet to establish a compelling message capable of defining its bid for another term.

He challenged the government to identify a single major policy, programme or achievement that could convincingly anchor its campaign ahead of the 2028 election.

He further argued that references to developments in other African countries, including Burkina Faso and Nigeria, could not replace the need for a clear and effective domestic economic strategy.

Mr. Ayertey maintained that the government would struggle to convince voters in 2028 if it could not clearly demonstrate what it had achieved and, more importantly, how those achievements had improved the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

He said the 2028 election would ultimately be determined by the experiences of voters and their assessment of the government’s performance in office.
