NDC communicator praises Mahama government over Free SHS and education sector reforms

NDC communicator praises Mahama government over Free SHS and education sector reforms

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashaiman Constituency, Joseph Frimpong, has praised the Mahama administration for what he describes as significant improvements in Ghana’s education sector under the current government.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem, hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Joseph Frimpong said the government had demonstrated increased commitment to education through improved funding, proper feeding arrangements and the timely payment of suppliers providing food items to second-cycle institutions.

He said the government had “transformed education tremendously,” citing several interventions which he believes are easing the financial burden on students, teachers and families.

According to him, the government has introduced a no-fee policy for first-year university students, which he said is helping to expand access to tertiary education.

He also highlighted the payment of allowances for teacher trainees and nursing trainees, saying the payments demonstrate the government’s commitment to supporting students pursuing careers in critical sectors of the economy.

His comments come after the Ghana Education Service (GES) dismissed claims circulating on social media that the Director-General had cancelled the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy and directed parents to pay GH¢1,500 for chop boxes and trunks.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the GES described the publication as false and urged the public to disregard it.

The Service clarified that the Free SHS policy has not been cancelled and that the Director-General of the GES has not issued any directive requiring parents or guardians to pay money for chop boxes, trunks or any other item.

The GES further explained that the Director-General does not have the authority to cancel the Free SHS policy.

Joseph Frimpong subsequently used the opportunity to commend the government for what he described as efforts to strengthen the implementation of Free SHS and improve conditions across the education sector.

He maintained that increased allocations to education, improved feeding arrangements and the payment of outstanding obligations to suppliers were signs of the government’s commitment to sustaining and improving the sector.
