Richard Anning criticises government over galamsey, economy and diversionary tactics

Coalition of Anti-Galamsey Executives urges action on galamsey, demands probe into politically linked miners

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Anning, has criticised the government over what he describes as worsening illegal mining, economic hardship, unemployment and attempts to divert public attention from pressing national issues.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Anning questioned the government’s approach to its campaign promises and policies, including automatic postings, arguing that some of the initiatives have failed to meet the expectations of Ghanaians.

He also criticised the demolition of markets, saying such exercises should not be undertaken without adequate research and alternative arrangements for traders who are affected.

On illegal mining, Mr. Anning alleged that galamsey has worsened under the current administration despite repeated assurances that the government would tackle the menace.

He further accused the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) of providing a market for illegally mined gold and warned that Ghana could become a major hub for illegal mining in West Africa if stronger measures are not implemented.

Mr. Anning also questioned the role of Sammy Gyamfi, whom he described as one of the key architects of the government’s approach to fighting illegal mining.

He argued that the continued expansion of illegal mining raises questions about the effectiveness of the government’s interventions and its commitment to ending the menace.

Touching on recent concerns over threats raised by the Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Anning suggested that the issue could divert attention from the country’s economic challenges.

He said the security agencies have the responsibility to investigate such threats and identify those behind them, insisting that government must remain focused on issues directly affecting the livelihoods of Ghanaians.

On the economy, Mr. Anning said ordinary Ghanaians continue to struggle with rising living costs and unemployment, particularly among the youth.

He questioned the impact of the betting tax, asking whether the policy has translated into meaningful employment opportunities for young people.

According to him, government’s priority should be to create jobs, reduce economic hardship and address the rising cost of living rather than shift public attention to issues he considers less urgent.

Mr. Anning further maintained that the demolition of markets without providing alternative trading spaces places an additional burden on already struggling citizens.

He urged the government to prioritise the fight against galamsey, job creation, economic recovery and measures to ease the cost of living.

He said attempts to divert public attention would not prevent Ghanaians from demanding accountability and answers on the government’s economic performance and its handling of key national challenges.
