The National Identification Authority (NIA) has clarified that the revised fees for Ghana Card registration and related services were not unilaterally introduced or increased by the Authority in 2026.
According to the NIA, the current fees were approved by Parliament under the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2512), pursuant to the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080).
The Authority said the revised fees took effect on February 2, 2026, and therefore do not constitute charges introduced solely by the NIA.
The NIA has also assured the public that its 276 district offices across the country remain fully operational and continue to provide Ghana Card registration and related services.
At the regular district offices, first-time registration remains free for persons below 25 years, while applicants aged 25 years and above are required to pay a GH¢30 processing fee.
The Authority further indicated that card replacement attracts a GH¢200 fee, while record updates remain free. Other charges apply to services including card renewal, nationality updates and related transactions.
Prestige Centre is optional
The NIA has also clarified that the recently introduced 24-hour Prestige Centre at Labone does not replace its regular registration centres.
The first Prestige Centre commenced operations on August 1, 2026, and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends.
The Authority described the Prestige Centre as an optional, fee-based service designed to provide greater convenience, flexibility and faster access to NIA services.
It stressed that members of the public are not required to use the Prestige Centre and can continue accessing applicable Ghana Card services at NIA district offices nationwide.
The NIA said the premium and prestige services are intended for individuals who specifically want additional convenience and an enhanced service experience.
The Authority has urged media organisations, commentators and members of the public to verify claims concerning Ghana Card fees and services before publishing or broadcasting them.
It said accurate information is particularly important in matters relating to national identification, as misinformation could create unnecessary confusion and concern among the public.
The NIA has encouraged the public to visit its official website or contact its call centre for clarification on Ghana Card registration, fees and related services.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and accessible identity services nationwide.
