The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council is demanding an apology from the District Chief Executive for Akyemansa District in the Eastern Region, Linda Ahenkora, for what it describes as her deliberate intrusion into chieftaincy affairs.
The traditional council says Linda Ahenkora has pitched camp with the secessionist Etweresohene, Ofosu Kwabi, and unlawfully recognised and elevated him to traditional council status by conduct.
The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council is further directing the Akyemansa District Chief Executive to withdraw a letter dated 7 July 2026, purporting to confer paramountcy status on the Etweresohene.
In a letter dated 12 August 2026 and signed by the State Secretary, DM Ofori-Atta, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council said it had taken notice of the actions of the DCE and demanded an apology and the immediate withdrawal of her letter.
The council said failure to do so would lead to an escalation of the matter to the appropriate authority.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has not appointed any person as Regent for the Etwereso Stool. The purported appointment of a Regent was an inadvertent omission, and the anomaly was rectified when the attention of Nananoom was drawn to the matter at the State Council meeting,” D M Ofori-Atta said.
The council said it is not oblivious to the lawful customary processes for the selection, nomination, appointment, installation and deposition of a person as a chief.
DM Ofori-Atta maintained that the council’s position regarding the status of the Etweresohene, as expressed in various public correspondence, remains unchanged.
He said the DCE should have exercised caution in the matter and sought clarification from the Ofori Panin Fie.
“A District Chief Executive cannot confer paramount status on any person or stool under the pretext of maintaining public peace, public order and administrative clarity,” Nananoom said.
Nananoom indicated that Article 270(2) of the 1992 Constitution prohibits even Parliament from enacting laws that seek to confer on any person or authority the right to accord or withdraw recognition to or from a chief for any purpose whatsoever, or in any way detract or derogate from the honour and dignity of the institution of chieftaincy.
“The administration, registration, public notification and recognition of a chief are entrusted to the constitutionally and statutorily designated chieftaincy institutions, not to any MMDCEs. With respect, a DCE cannot confer chieftaincy titles, determine disputed customary status, confer paramount ranks, or decide the allegiance of chiefs by an unlawful exercise of executive fiat. Traditional councils are creatures of law and custom. Paramountcies are principally derived from customary law and the historical constitution of a traditional community,” the letter noted.
Nananoom emphasised that the Etwereso Stool remains a sub-stool of the Benkum Division of the Ofori Panin Stool, and that the Okyenhene is committed to all peaceful processes and will not abdicate responsibility for the Etwereso matter.
