The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confiscated and safely disposed of a container of diapers that failed to meet the required regulatory and quality standards for products imported into Ghana.
The action forms part of the FDA’s ongoing efforts to protect public health and safety by preventing products that do not meet established regulatory requirements from entering or remaining on the Ghanaian market.
The consignment, contained in container number MSNU7235590, a 40-foot container imported by Jobbies Cleaning Services, was received at the Golden Jubilee Terminal.
Following inspection, the FDA determined that the bale of diapers did not meet the applicable standard specifications and regulatory requirements.
Interestingly, when the container was opened at Vigour DW for disposal, FDA officials discovered packets of premium toilet rolls inside the container, which had been used to conceal the bale of non-compliant diapers.
The discovery was made during the inspection and verification process conducted before the contents were safely disposed of.
After the necessary regulatory procedures had been completed, the non-compliant diapers were incinerated at Vigour DW to ensure that they could not find their way onto the Ghanaian market.
The FDA says the enforcement action underscores its commitment to ensuring that only products that meet approved quality, safety and regulatory requirements are allowed onto the Ghanaian market.
The Authority has therefore reminded importers, distributors and businesses dealing in FDA-regulated products that all applicable products must be duly registered with the FDA before being imported into Ghana.
Importers are also required to comply with all relevant regulatory requirements to ensure that products entering the country meet prescribed standards.
The FDA has cautioned businesses against attempts to conceal, misrepresent or import non-compliant products, stressing that such actions do not exempt them from regulatory scrutiny and may result in enforcement measures, including seizure and safe disposal.
The Authority has further urged businesses and the general public to support its regulatory efforts by ensuring that products available on the Ghanaian market are safe, of acceptable quality and compliant with national standards.
The FDA says it remains committed to protecting public health through effective regulation, surveillance and enforcement and has called on all stakeholders to ensure full compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
