Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has cautioned members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against getting drawn into discussions about who should lead the party into the 2028 general election.
Speaking on The KSM Show on Friday, August 6, 2026, the Vice President said the NDC’s immediate priority should be fulfilling the mandate given to the party by Ghanaians rather than engaging in premature succession politics.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang was responding to questions about whether she would consider contesting the NDC’s flagbearership ahead of the next presidential election.
She said the party’s chances of retaining power would largely depend on the performance of the current administration and the level of support members provide President John Dramani Mahama as he leads the government.
“Whether we are going or coming depends on the work we are doing. It depends on the support we are giving our president who’s leading the charge. And it depends on the quality of support we are giving,” she said.
The Vice President warned that beginning internal discussions about the party’s next presidential candidate at this stage could divert attention from the government’s responsibilities.
“And if we are already going left or right, and centre and back, and it’s not even time, I think it’s a betrayal of the course of the people, and I don’t think it is right,” she said.
She subsequently urged NDC supporters and party members to concentrate on helping the administration deliver on its promises to Ghanaians.
“So please help us to fulfill the dreams of this beautiful country. Let’s focus on getting the job done,” she added.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang also reflected on the NDC’s return to power in the 2024 general election, stressing that the victory followed years of political work and a demanding campaign.
Her comments come amid growing speculation within the NDC over potential contenders for the 2028 flagbearership, although the party is yet to formally open the process for selecting its next presidential candidate.
