The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is planning a nationwide demonstration on Thursday, August 6, 2026, accusing government of undermining Ghana’s democratic institutions.
The protest, dubbed “Democracy Under Attack,” is set to begin at 6:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court and end at Jubilee House. The party is rallying supporters online under the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow and #SayNoToStateCapture.
NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, who announced the planned protest at a press conference, said, “The time for silence is over. The New Patriotic Party thereby serves notice that on the 6th of August, in collaboration with other political parties, civil society organisations, professional bodies, student movements, youth movements and all well-meaning citizens, we shall embark on a massive demonstration to defend our democracy.”
He added that the demonstration, which will take place in Accra, will be replicated in other parts of the country at later dates.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an NPP communications team member and spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, said the demonstration is a response to what he called mounting attempts by government to silence dissent.
“Try as you may, you can never suppress the will of the people,” he said in a Facebook post.
Aboagye pointed to a string of grievances driving the protest, arrests of opposition figures and critics, charges over alleged insults, the detention of TikTok users and journalists, and what he described as the misuse of bail conditions.
He also accused the Executive of growing too close to the Judiciary, calling it a danger to the democracy Ghana’s founders fought to build.
The demonstration comes at a tense moment politically, with the NPP framing it as a stand for civil liberties, the rule of law and accountability.
Government has consistently denied targeting political opponents, maintaining that arrests and prosecutions follow due process and that law enforcement and the judiciary operate independently.
