The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confiscated smoked and dried fish found to have been processed under unhygienic conditions following the circulation of a viral video on social media.
In a press release issued on Monday, July 28, 2026, the FDA said it swiftly deployed a rapid response team to the location on July 27 in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the Ghana Police Service to assess the situation.
According to the Authority, all fish exposed to the unsafe conditions were immediately confiscated, while the processors involved were educated on the public health risks associated with poor hygiene during fish processing.
The FDA also announced plans to intensify public education by engaging fish processors and fishmongers across the affected coastal districts on proper hygienic practices to help safeguard public health.
The Authority urged consumers to buy smoked and dried fish only from reputable and hygienic sources, inspect fish carefully before purchase, wash it thoroughly before cooking, and ensure it is adequately cooked before consumption.
The FDA further encouraged the public to report any suspected unhygienic food processing, storage or sale to the nearest FDA office or local assembly.
It assured Ghanaians that, together with its partner agencies, it will continue removing unsafe fish and fish products from the market while strengthening education and enforcement activities to protect public health and safety.
