Thomas Ayertey calls for fair enforcement of mining laws

Thomas Ayertey calls for fair enforcement of mining laws

Thomas Ayertey, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on politicians across Ghana’s political divide to draw lessons from the legal troubles involving NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, insisting that no individual should be shielded from the law because of political affiliation.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Adomba De-Starboy, Ayertey stated that the case against Chairman Wontumi is based on provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703). He explained that mining in forest reserves or engaging in mining activities without the required permits and licences constitutes a serious offence under Ghanaian law, attracting substantial fines and lengthy prison terms.

He criticised politicians and legal practitioners who publicly defend individuals accused of illegal mining despite being aware of the legal implications. According to him, forest reserves are protected areas where mining is prohibited, and anyone found violating the law must be allowed to face the full rigours of the justice system without political interference.

Ayertey stressed that the enforcement of Ghana’s mining laws must be applied fairly and consistently, regardless of a person’s political status or influence. He accused some political parties of shielding members involved in illegal mining for partisan reasons, warning that such actions undermine efforts to combat galamsey. He urged political parties to distance themselves from illegal mining activities and allow the courts to handle such matters independently.

Addressing the youth, Ayertey cautioned against being enticed into illegal mining by the lavish lifestyles often displayed on social media. He warned that the pursuit of quick wealth through unlawful means could jeopardise their future and encouraged young people to seek legitimate sources of income while remaining law-abiding citizens.

He further called on politicians to demonstrate humility, respect the rule of law, and avoid arrogance in public office.

Concluding his remarks, Ayertey described the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining as a major threat to Ghana’s future. He noted that successive governments have acknowledged the dangers posed by galamsey and urged authorities to sustain the impartial enforcement of mining laws, free from fear or favour, to safeguard the country’s natural resources for future generations.
