The Porcupine Warriors announced the appointment on Friday, July 17, 2026, describing Tinkler as a coach with vast experience at the highest level of African football and a proven record of player development and success.
The Portuguese-South African brings more than three decades of football experience to Kumasi, having previously managed top South African clubs including Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United and Bidvest Wits FC.
During his coaching career, Tinkler guided Orlando Pirates to a runner-up finish in the CAF Champions League and helped SuperSport United finish second in the CAF Confederation Cup. He also won domestic honours, including the MTN 8 title and Telkom Knockout trophy.
Before moving into coaching, Tinkler enjoyed an accomplished playing career. He earned 48 caps for South Africa, captained the Bafana Bafana at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations and featured at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was also part of the South African squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
Asante Kotoko said Tinkler will work closely with the club’s Director of Football, Stanley Menzo, as the club seeks to build a competitive structure capable of achieving sustained domestic and continental success.
Club chairman James Osei Brown welcomed the appointment, saying Tinkler’s experience, discipline and winning mentality made him the right choice to lead the technical team.
Tinkler, in his first remarks after the appointment, expressed excitement about joining one of Africa’s most decorated clubs and pledged to work with the players and staff to build a team capable of competing both locally and on the continent.
The former Ghana Premier League champions will now look to the experienced tactician to guide their next chapter as they aim to reclaim domestic dominance and make a strong return to continental competition.
