GMet defends GH¢10,400 charge for specialised weather data request

Ghana Meteorological Agency Embark On An Indefinite Strike Today

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has clarified the basis for charging GH¢10,400 for a specialised meteorological data request submitted by Benjamin Tenkorang, following public discussions on the matter.

In a statement issued on June 29, 2026, the Agency said the clarification became necessary after comments made by Mr. Tenkorang during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on June 17 regarding fees charged for specialised meteorological data.

According to GMet, Mr. Tenkorang submitted a formal request on March 12, 2026, seeking a customised analytical report covering a ten-year period from 2016 to 2025. The request included annual and average rainfall data, rainfall measurement methodologies, locations with the highest and lowest rainfall, rainfall seasons and number of rainfall days, annual temperature records, as well as information on the duration of the Harmattan season.

The Agency explained that the request went beyond routine weather information, describing it as a highly specialised assignment that required officers to retrieve archived datasets, verify and validate records, analyse data from 22 synoptic weather stations across the country, and prepare a customised technical report.

GMet stated that the fees were calculated in accordance with the Fees and Charges Act and Regulations, 2025 (L.I. 2512). It said the cost covered rainfall and temperature data spanning ten years, data processing from the 22 weather stations, and the preparation of a customised analytical report.

The Agency disclosed that the data processing component amounted to GH¢10,140, while the customised analytical report attracted an additional GH¢260, bringing the total cost to GH¢10,400.

GMet stressed that the charges were not arbitrary but were based on its approved schedule of fees and are applied uniformly to all individuals and institutions requesting comparable specialised meteorological data and customised technical reports.

The Agency reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and providing accurate meteorological information while ensuring that specialised requests are processed in line with established statutory regulations.
