The Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for the Kpone Katamanso Municipality, Francis Kwasi Badu Mello, has urged residents living in flood-prone communities to evacuate to safer locations whenever heavy rainfall is imminent.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem on Plan B FM, hosted by Abusuapanyin Mireku, Mr. Mello disclosed that a joint rescue operation involving NADMO, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies rescued about 105 residents from the Tse Addo area following Sunday’s heavy rains.
He advised residents not to wait until floodwaters rise before leaving their homes, but rather seek temporary shelter with friends or relatives as soon as the weather begins to pose a threat.
Mr. Mello noted that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast more rainfall in the coming days and appealed to the public to remain vigilant and heed all weather advisories.
He also called on residents to stop dumping refuse indiscriminately, particularly into drains and gutters, stressing that such practices contribute significantly to flooding.
The NADMO official further cautioned the public, especially children, against playing in floodwaters, warning that they are heavily contaminated and pose serious health risks. He also advised residents not to open their toilet systems to collect rainwater for flushing, describing the practice as unsafe and unhygienic.
Mr. Mello added that President John Dramani Mahama toured some of the affected communities and assured victims that the government would implement practical and lasting measures to address the flooding situation.
