A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema Central Constituency, Richard Anning, has blamed the Mahama administration for the devastating floods that affected parts of the country following Sunday’s heavy rains.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem on Plan B FM, hosted by Abusuapanyin Mireku, Mr. Anning argued that the government’s much-touted “Reset Agenda” has failed to deliver the expected results, particularly in addressing the country’s perennial flooding challenge.
According to him, although the government fulfilled its promise to reduce the number of ministries and ministers, the financial allocations to the remaining ministries remain substantial. He questioned whether those resources were being effectively utilised to address pressing national concerns.
Mr. Anning further alleged that the government has failed to deploy the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) machines inherited from the previous administration to undertake desilting and other flood mitigation works.
He also accused the government of depriving the Ministry of Works and Housing of the funds and logistical support required to carry out preventive measures, including forecasting, desilting drains and clearing waterways ahead of the rainy season.
The NPP member maintained that the administration had not done enough to prepare for the rains and alleged that inadequate funding, including for the operation and fuelling of DRIP machines, had undermined efforts to tackle flooding.
Mr. Anning described the government’s handling of flood prevention as a failure and called for urgent action to strengthen drainage maintenance and improve preparedness to minimise the impact of future floods.
