A heartbreaking scene unfolded in Atimpoku on Friday morning after a fatal road crash near the Atimpoku Police Station claimed the life of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby, sending shockwaves through the riverside community.
Eyewitnesses said the incident involved a tipper truck that was reportedly attempting to make way for a bullion van when it suddenly lost control and veered off its lane.
The vehicle is said to have mounted the roadside in a desperate attempt to avoid collision, but instead struck the woman who was returning home after attending antenatal care.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, with bystanders describing the moment as devastating and too painful to watch as emergency efforts proved futile.
According to residents, the impact was so severe that passersby were left screaming and running in different directions as confusion gripped the busy stretch of road.
One eyewitness, who gave his name only as Kofi Mensah, said the truck appeared to be speeding before it lost balance while trying to give way.
We just saw the truck swerving uncontrollably. Before anyone could react, it had already hit her. It was heartbreaking, he recounted tearfully.
Another resident added that the victim had just stepped off a nearby clinic where she had gone for routine antenatal checks earlier that morning.
She was walking carefully by the roadside. Everything happened in seconds. Now she and her unborn child are gone, the resident lamented.
Police officers from the Atimpoku Police Station quickly arrived at the scene to restore order and begin preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The driver of the tipper truck was reportedly taken into custody to assist with investigations, while both vehicles involved were towed from the scene.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution along the busy corridor, especially around market hours and near health facilities where pedestrian movement is high.
The tragic incident has reignited concerns among residents about reckless driving and the increasing presence of heavy-duty trucks on narrow community roads.
Community leaders called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent loss of innocent lives on stretch.
