An investigator with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice in Tema, Isabella, has urged the public to be bold and not allow fear or intimidation to prevent them from reporting cases of abuse to the appropriate authorities.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s lifestyle programme Nyansapo Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Isabella explained that many cases of threats, physical abuse, and sexual abuse often go unreported because victims fear reprisal attacks from their abusers.
According to her, victims and complainants should report such cases to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, or other relevant institutions for the necessary action to be taken.
She further outlined several ways people can overcome fear, including speaking to therapists, counsellors, and trusted religious leaders, as well as reporting cases to the police or the appropriate state agencies.
A caller who contributed to the discussion also cautioned the public against blindly following some pastors who instil fear in their congregants and influence them into making decisions that may eventually not benefit them.
She cited her personal experience, explaining that her pastor discouraged her from family planning and convinced her that giving birth to many children was a blessing. According to her, this eventually led to her having seven children without the financial means to adequately care for them.
