A member of the NDC Communication Team in the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, Selorm Avedetsi, says the National Democratic Congress’ two-thirds majority in Parliament has so far been beneficial to Ghanaians since the party assumed office in January 2025.
His comments come in response to remarks by Kwame Asah-Asare, a Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, who described Ghana’s Parliament as weak following the outcome of the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on Accra-based Joy Prime TV on Thursday, May 21, Dr. Asah-Asare argued that the NDC’s two-thirds majority in the 276-member Parliament has tilted the balance of legislative power and weakened parliamentary independence.
“The moment we voted and gave NDC a two-thirds majority, Parliament from the word go became weak,” he stated.
He further explained that Members of Parliament often prioritise party loyalty over national interest once they enter the House.
“So, obviously, when you bring things to the floor, people use their political positions to scatter all those things. So, unfortunately, we are going to be in this for a long time,” he added.
However, speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem, hosted by Abusuapanin Mireku, Mr. Avedetsi disagreed with the political scientist’s assessment, insisting that the NDC majority in Parliament has rather helped push policies aimed at improving the lives of Ghanaians.
According to him, government initiatives such as the Big Push agenda, the Ghana Gold Board Bill, the proposed 24-hour economy policy, and the National Decentralisation Policy have all gained momentum through the support of the NDC majority in Parliament and are positively impacting citizens.
Mr. Avedetsi also criticised the previous New Patriotic Party administration, accusing it of using its parliamentary majority to introduce policies that imposed hardship on Ghanaians, including the E-Levy and what he described as draconian legislation.
On the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, he stated that the current government and the NDC majority in Parliament are making efforts to address the menace through initiatives such as the Blue Water Guard programme and the establishment of anti-galamsey interventions.
