A member of the NDC Communication Team in the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, Selorm Avedetsi, has called on Ghana to uphold its cultural values and societal norms amid renewed discussions surrounding LGBTQ+ issues in the country.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem, hosted by Abusuapanin Mireku, Mr. Avedetsi reacted to recent developments in Parliament regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed the committee considering the bill to submit its report for debate and possible approval before the current parliamentary session ends.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, May 21, Mr. Bagbin described the proposed legislation as a matter of significant national interest and urged lawmakers to expedite work on it.
The bill, widely referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, has sparked intense national debate. While religious groups and traditional leaders have largely supported the proposal, human rights organisations and sections of the international community have expressed concerns about its implications.
Mr. Bagbin noted that many Ghanaians are increasingly concerned about delays in passing the bill and assured the public that Parliament remains mindful of those expectations. He further revealed that the committee handling the legislation has completed stakeholder engagements and public consultations, paving the way for the next stage of the parliamentary process.
Commenting on the issue, Mr. Avedetsi argued that countries such as Japan, India, China and Russia have remained guided by their cultural values and traditions, which he believes contribute to societal discipline and national development.
He therefore urged Ghanaian leaders to preserve the values handed down by the country’s forefathers and resist practices he described as inconsistent with Ghanaian culture and traditions.
