Minority’s motion to investigate GoldBod losses rejected by Parliament

Parliament Brouhaha: Stop the childish behavior and think about Ghana – Felix Kwasi jabs NPP Caucus in Parliament

Parliament has rejected a motion by the Minority seeking to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate alleged losses at the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and issues related to the Gold-for-Reserves scheme.

The motion was defeated after Majority members in Parliament voted overwhelmingly to block the Minority’s attempt to initiate the probe.

Following the vote, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, called for a secret ballot, believing it could overturn the outcome.

He argued that he had received assurances from some Majority members that they would support the motion if a secret ballot were conducted.

However, his request was denied after Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin ruled against it, noting that the Standing Orders of the House do not provide for such a voting method in this context.

The Minority’s motion aimed to investigate the Gold-for-Reserves scheme, including its design, implementation, governance, financial performance, environmental impact, and public health implications.

The Speaker announced that the motion had been rejected, effectively blocking the Minority’s attempt to scrutinise GoldBod’s financial activities.
